Driving licence renewal in India depends on three things: your age when the licence was issued or last renewed, whether it is a transport or non-transport licence, and how close you are to the expiry date. The calculator below takes your date of birth, licence type and the date of issue or last renewal, and shows the expiry date, the window in which you can renew without a fresh driving test, and whether you will need a medical certificate.

This website is run independently and is not part of the government Parivahan system, so nothing is filed or paid here; renewal requests and fees go only through the Sarathi service or the RTO counter. Avoid agents and copycat sites that charge extra for a DL renewal online that you can file yourself for the official fee.

Using the driving licence validity calculator

Enter three things: your date of birth, the licence type (non-transport, such as a private car or motorcycle, or transport, such as a taxi or goods vehicle) and the date shown as the date of issue or last renewal on your licence. You do not need your licence number. The result shows:

  • Expiry date, worked out from the Section 14 rules in the next section.
  • Renewal window, from one year before expiry to one year after it.
  • Medical certificate, marked as needed if you will be 40 or older at renewal, or if the licence is a transport licence.

Treat the result as a guide. Your actual driving licence validity is whatever is printed on the licence and shown on Sarathi; if they differ from the calculator, follow the licence. You can check the record any time with our DL status guide.

Driving licence validity in India by age (Section 14)

Section 14, in the form in force since 1 September 2019, sets validity by your age on the date the licence is issued or renewed.

Licence and age at issue or renewalValid until
Non-transport, under 30The day you turn 40
Non-transport, 30 or above but under 50Ten years
Non-transport, 50 or above but under 55The day you turn 60
Non-transport, 55 or aboveFive years
Transport vehicle, any ageFive years (it was three years before 2019)
Hazardous goods authorisationThree years under the 2019 amended text, with renewal subject to conditions the Central Government prescribes (older pages say one year, so confirm with your RTO)

Older pages that say a private licence lasts 20 years or until 50 describe the pre-2019 rules. For a two wheeler licence renewal the same non-transport row applies as for a car.

When you can renew: the one-year window

Section 15, as amended in 2019, lets you apply for renewal of driving licence at any time from one year before the expiry date until one year after it. Inside that window the licence is renewed without a fresh driving test.

If you apply more than one year after the licence stopped being effective, the licensing authority must refuse renewal unless you pass the test of competence to drive again. In practice that means a fresh driving test at the RTO, so do not let the delay pass a year.

Under the 2019 text a licence renewed under Section 15 takes effect from the date of renewal. News reports from August 2026 say the Jan Vishwas changes also let an early renewal keep the remaining validity, but one report called this a recommendation and it has not been confirmed officially. Check the new expiry date Sarathi shows before you pay.

The grace period: removed in 2019, reported restored in 2026

Before 2019, a proviso to Section 14 kept an expired licence effective for 30 days. The Delhi High Court held (reported 30 March 2026) that the 2019 amendment omitted that proviso, so an expired licence did not stay valid after expiry.

The Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026 proposed bringing back a 30-day grace period during which an expired licence stays valid (see the PIB release). Parliament passed it in April 2026. News reports say it was gazetted on 8 April 2026 and that the licence changes apply from 15 August 2026, though one report said dates may vary across states. We have not seen an official commencement notification for these provisions.

So treat the 30-day grace period as reinstated by the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026 per reports, and do not rely on it: renew before your expiry date. If an official commencement notice appears, we will record it in the status panel that opens this guide.

Medical certificate and Form 9

The renewal application is made in Form 9 under CMVR Rule 18. A medical certificate in Form 1A, signed by a registered medical practitioner, must go with it in two cases (Section 15):

  • you have reached 40 years of age, or
  • you are renewing a licence to drive a transport vehicle.

Some states may ask for more for transport renewals. For example, the Andaman and Nicobar transport department made Form 5A mandatory for renewal of transport category licences from 20 November 2025. Follow the list of uploads Sarathi shows for your state.

Driving licence renewal fees and the late fee (Rule 32)

Rule 32 of the CMVR gives the base amounts below. Your final bill is higher once state-level user charges and the card cost are added, and the payment page shows that total.

ItemFee under Rule 32
Renewal of driving licenceRs 200
Renewal after the grace periodRs 300, plus Rs 1,000 for each year or part of a year of delay counted from the end of the grace period
Smart card licence in Form 7Rs 200 extra
Test of competence to drive (if a retest is needed)Rs 300 per class of vehicle

Example: if you apply a few months after the grace period has ended, that counts as part of a year of delay, so the Rule 32 amount would be Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000, before state charges. How each state counts the grace period after the 2026 change is not yet clear, so confirm on Sarathi.

How to do driving licence renewal online

If you are wondering how to renew driving licence papers without queuing, the parivahan driving licence renewal route is the one to use. The 2021 contactless-services notification (S.O. 1026(E)) lists renewal that needs no competence test among the services you can complete with Aadhaar authentication. Contactless services are meant to be completed online without an RTO visit. This sequence is taken from the Uttarakhand transport department's published guide. Button names are occasionally renamed, so match each step to the nearest option you see.

  1. Visit Sarathi, or start at parivahan.gov.in and follow its licence services link.
  2. Select the state that issued your licence.
  3. Open the driving licence services and choose "Services on DL" (renewal, duplicate, change of address and IDP are applied for here).
  4. Key in the licence number and birth date, solve the captcha, then check that the licence shown is yours.
  5. Select renewal as the service. If you also need a change of address, check whether the screen lets you add it.
  6. Complete the Form 9 fields and attach the listed files, including Form 1A if you are 40 or above or hold a transport licence.
  7. Pay the fee. A test slot is needed only if the portal asks for one.
  8. Save the reference number; your driving licence renewal status can be followed under "Application Status".

Once renewed, you can save the updated licence as explained in driving licence download. A pending challan can stall this. Under Rule 167 in its amended form, a licence application can be held back when a challan has had no response at all, though states apply it differently (position in October 2026), so clear or contest any dues first using our e-challan guide.

State searches: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Telangana and others

Searches such as "renew drivers license online" or "drivers license renewal" use the American spelling, but they mean the same Indian DL renewal. People also search for driving licence renewal online Maharashtra, driving licence renewal Gujarat, Kerala or Telangana as if each state had a separate site. The validity rules, renewal window, Form 9 and Rule 32 base fee are set centrally, though reports say the 2026 grace period dates may vary across states. What differs by state is the service charge, smart card charge, extra uploads (such as Form 5A in some places) and whether a visit is needed. Sarathi carries each state's licence services, and you pick your state on its first screen. For a brand-new licence rather than a renewal, see apply for a driving licence.

Questions people ask

How do I renew my driving licence online?

Pick your state on Sarathi, go to Services on DL, identify the licence with its number and your birth date, tick renewal, upload Form 1A if needed, pay and submit. Renewal without a driving test is an Aadhaar-based contactless service.

What is the fee for driving licence renewal?

The base renewal fee is Rs 200 (CMVR Rule 32). Renewal after the grace period costs Rs 300 plus Rs 1,000 for each year or part of a year of delay. State user charges come on top, so the payment page total is what counts.

Is there a grace period after my licence expires?

The 2019 amendment removed the old 30-day grace period. Reports say the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026 restored a 30-day grace period, applying from 15 August 2026, but we have not seen an official commencement notification and one report says dates may vary across states. Renew before expiry to be safe.

What happens if I renew more than a year after expiry?

The licensing authority must refuse renewal unless you pass the driving test again (Section 15). The Rule 32 late fee (Rs 1,000 for each year or part of a year, counted from the end of the grace period) also applies.

Do I need a medical certificate to renew my licence?

Yes, if you are 40 or older, or if it is a transport vehicle licence. The certificate is Form 1A, signed by a registered medical practitioner.

How long will my renewed licence be valid?

It depends on your age at renewal: under 30 until you turn 40, 30 to under 50 for ten years, 50 to under 55 until you turn 60, and 55 or above for five years. Transport licences are valid for five years.

Where can I track a renewal application?

Open Application Status on Sarathi and enter the reference number you got when filing, plus your birth date. Our DL status guide explains the steps and what each status means.
