A DL status check tells you where your driving licence application has reached on Sarathi, the government's licence portal, and you do it with your application number and date of birth. We are an independent explainer and not the government Parivahan portal; the real status check, payment verification and any follow-up take place on Sarathi itself or at your RTO.
Below you will find the three different checks people mean by "licence status", the steps for each, what the stages usually mean, and a short plan for when an application seems stuck. Any portal or rule change we have verified since this guide was written appears in the status box above.
Three kinds of DL status check
People use "dl status" for three quite different needs. Pick the one that matches your situation before you start:
| Your situation | Which check | What you enter |
|---|---|---|
| You applied for a learner licence, a new DL, a renewal or a duplicate and want to know its progress | Application status | Application number, date of birth, captcha |
| Money left your account but the application still shows the fee as unpaid | Payment status verification | Application number, date of birth, captcha |
| You already hold a licence and want to see its details or confirm it is genuine | DL details or a digital copy | DL number and date of birth |
Whether you call it an online licence check, an online DL check or driving licence tracking, it is one of these three. Searches for rc dl status mix two systems: the RC (registration certificate) of a vehicle sits on Vahan, while your licence sits on Sarathi, so check each in its own place. People who search sarathi parivahan gov in application status want the option that covers the first two rows; a driving licence check online for the third row is easiest through a digital copy.
The CMVR Rule 32 fees we list are for services such as tests and issuing a licence, not for looking up a status. A site that wants money to "track" a licence is not the government portal.
Driving licence application status by application number
You get an application number when you apply on Sarathi. Keep a record of it, because the status, payment and slot booking steps described here all ask for it. Third-party descriptions give these steps; wording on the live portal can differ, so match each step to what you see:
- Open the Sarathi portal by typing the .gov.in address yourself.
- Select the state where you applied.
- Choose "Application Status" from the menu. The Uttarakhand transport department lists it as one of the main Sarathi service groups.
- Enter the application number, your date of birth and the captcha.
- Submit and read the stage shown for your application.
Learner licence, new licence, renewal, duplicate and address change applications are all made on Sarathi, so this check is the place to start for each of them. If the screen asks for something different, go with what it shows.
Payment status verification when the fee seems missing
A common worry is a fee that was debited from the bank but not shown against the application. Before paying again, use the payment check. Third-party guides describe an option called "Payment Status Verification" that asks for the application number, birth date and a captcha. Portal labels may change, so look for the closest match under Fee Payments or Application Status.
- If the check shows the payment as successful, continue with the next step, such as slot booking.
- If it shows the payment as failed or pending, do not rush to pay again; check once more later or ask the RTO.
- Keep the bank reference number and the time of the transaction. The RTO may ask for them if you need help.
The fee itself is set under CMVR Rule 32, with state service and smart card charges on top, so the amount you paid may be higher than the central fee. Our apply guide has the full fee table.
Checking the details of a licence you already hold
If you already have a licence and want to confirm its number, validity or classes of vehicle, a digital copy is a practical route. MoRTH's 2018 advisory asked states to accept a licence shown via DigiLocker or the mParivahan app. See driving licence download for the steps.
Sarathi also has a licence details search under the driving licence services, which third-party pages call "Search DL Details". We could not check the live label, so use the closest option on screen. Those pages describe it as asking for the licence number and your birth date.
Searches like "check driving licence number by name" are very common, but the official steps we could confirm all start from an application number or a DL number. Treat sites offering name-only searches with caution, as they are not the official route. Section 25A of the Motor Vehicles Act, added in 2019, has the Central Government keep a central register of licences, and a licence is valid only with a unique number issued under it.
What the stages of a DL application mean
The exact wording on the status screen varies by state and changes over time, so treat the table below as a guide to the order of events rather than exact labels. The National Portal of India describes the driving licence process as online form, fee, documents, slot booking, then RTO processing, driving track integration, final approval and smart card generation.
| Stage | What it usually means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Form submitted | Your details are saved and an application number exists | Pay the fee and upload documents if not done |
| Fee paid | Payment is linked to the application | Book a test slot |
| Learner test passed | Your learner licence can be printed | Download it and start practising |
| Driving test slot booked | A date and test centre are fixed | Attend with the vehicle class you applied for |
| Test result recorded | The examiner has entered pass or fail | If failed, pay the repeat test fee and book again |
| RTO processing and approval | Officials verify documents and approve | Wait; respond if the RTO asks for anything |
| Smart card generation | The card is being produced | Download a digital copy meanwhile |
When your DL status check shows no progress
Applications stall for a handful of reasons. Work through these in order:
- Confirm the state and number. Make sure you selected the state where you applied and typed the application number correctly.
- Verify the payment. An unlinked payment holds everything after it.
- Look for a pending document or test. An upload that is still due or a test not yet taken can hold the application.
- Check your mobile number. In August 2025, licence holders were asked by SMS to update and confirm the mobile number on their licence through Aadhaar authentication, using the "Update Your Mobile Number" option. Several steps send a code to that mobile, so keep the number current.
- Clear or contest pending challans. The rewritten Rule 167 (notified in January 2026) lets the licensing side hold back DL applications when a challan has been ignored, meaning neither paid nor contested; states apply it in different ways, as of October 2026. Look it up on echallan.parivahan.gov.in; the e-challan explainer covers paying or contesting.
- Contact the RTO. Take your application number, payment reference and ID proof. The RTO named on your application is the authority that can move it forward.
State searches: DL status in UP, Telangana, Punjab and others
Searches such as "dl status up", "telangana driving license status" or "driving licence application status punjab" all lead to the same answer: start at Sarathi and select that state. The licence was issued by an authority in that state, so the record sits under it. If a service is handled differently in your state, the state transport department's own website is the place to confirm it.
If you moved to another state, check the status under the state where the application was made, not where you live now. For renewal of an expiring licence, the steps and time limits are on our renewal page.
Learner licence status and print
Where the online learner test is offered, you can download the learner licence as soon as you pass. Odisha's print steps find the record with any one of three keys plus your date of birth, and then ask for a security code from your phone. The learner licence (Form 3) remains valid for six months.
If the learner test shows as failed, the repeat learner test fee under Rule 32 is Rs 50, before any state charges. The learning licence guide covers eligibility and the test, and the mock test helps you prepare.
Avoid paying anyone to check your status
You do not need to pay a third party to see your status. Agents sometimes ask for money to "speed up" an application or to share the status, and some look-alike websites collect application numbers, dates of birth and mobile numbers. Never share an OTP with anyone, and reach Sarathi by typing its address, never through a link in a message. If you were cheated online, file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, or dial 1930 for help.
Questions people ask
How do I check my driving licence status by application number?
Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, select your state, choose Application Status, then enter the application number, date of birth and captcha. The screen shows the stage your application has reached. Menu names can be reworded, so go by what the screen shows.
Can I check DL status by mobile number?
The application status check we could confirm uses the application number and date of birth. Some states let you print a learner licence using your mobile number and date of birth, as Odisha's steps show. For a full DL application, keep the application number from your acknowledgement.
I lost my application number. What now?
Look through the acknowledgement page, the payment receipt and any SMS you received when applying. If none of these has it, visit the RTO named on the application with ID proof and the payment reference. Do not pay websites that promise to recover it.
Can I search a driving licence by name and date of birth?
We could not confirm an official name-only search. The official routes start from a DL number or an application number with the date of birth. To see your own licence, use DigiLocker or mParivahan.
Why is my DL application not moving even after the test?
After the test, the RTO still has to verify and approve the file, and then the smart card is printed. Check that your payment is linked and that no document is pending. Under Rule 167 as amended, a challan left without action can also hold up licence processing, depending on how your state applies it (position as of October 2026).
Does checking DL status cost money?
The official steps for a status or payment check involve no fee; the Rule 32 fees are for services such as tests and licence issue. Pay only the official fee for a service, on the .gov.in site, and never pay an agent just to see your status.
